Cyclopentane: What It Is and How It’s Used to Make Foam Products

If you are familiar with the specialty chemicals we make here at Trecora, you may be familiar with pentane. But what about cyclopentane? The colorless, flammable liquid hydrocarbon plays a key role in manufacturing all sorts of polyurethane foam products.

Consumers refer to polyurethane foam as Styrofoam. Regardless, it can be manufactured with different properties suitable to individual applications. Think of foam cups, helmet padding, and even insulation for both buildings and temperature-sensitive packing materials.

In order to create the polyurethane beads that ultimately become foam products, the material is subject to a blowing agent. A blowing agent is also applied when beads are combined to make finished products. That blowing agent can be cyclopentane.

A Word About Cyclopentane

As a liquid hydrocarbon, cyclopentane’s chemical formula is C₅H₁₀. It is a member of the cycloalkane family of compounds with a 5-carbon ring structure. It smells heavily of petroleum, is insoluble in water, and has a very low boiling point.

Specifically in the plastics industry, cyclopentane is an excellent blowing agent for producing rigid polyurethane foams. Think of rigid foams primarily as insulators. They are made in panels and installed in refrigerators, freezers, and pipelines. The panels are even used in both residential and commercial construction for insulating purposes.

How It Works

Polyurethane foam is a fantastic insulator because of its closed cell structure. Inside each cell is air. The air is trapped within the material itself, and because air is such a great insulator, combining it with polyurethane creates a material that does not transfer heat very easily.

During manufacturing, cyclopentane is mixed with polyisocyanate and polyol components at the foaming stage. The combination creates a chemical reaction that forces the cyclopentane to vaporize. This is what creates the bubbles that expand to form the material’s signature cellular structure.

Some cyclopentane remains trapped inside the cells along with air. But it is a residual gas that also does not readily conduct heat.

Why Manufacturers Prefer It

Manufacturers can choose from a variety of blowing agents to create polyurethane foam. The question is this: why do they prefer cyclopentane? There are a number of reasons:

  • Superior Insulation – Foams blown with cyclopentane are better insulators than competitors blown with other agents like CFCs, HFCs, and even pentane itself. Cyclopentane gas reduces heat transfer, making for a better material.
  • Efficiency – Foam insulators made with cyclopentane are also more efficient. Compared to HFC-blown materials, for example, cyclopentane-blown foam is 4% more efficient.
  • Sustainability – Cyclopentane is more environmentally friendly than both CFCs and HCFCs. It boasts a zero-ozone depletion potential along with a lower global warming potential.

Cyclopentane can be used in concert with other pentanes to enhance certain properties as a foam product requires. For example, better dimensional stability can be achieved by mixing it with isopentane or n-pentane. The ratios of each co-blowing agent can be modified to produce optimal results.

Some of the Best Rigid Polyurethane Foam

It is no secret that cyclopentane produces some of the best rigid polyurethane foam in the industry. Its unique combination of physical properties, insulation performance, and sustainability makes it a preferred blowing agent for producers. And as the industry tries to get away from CFCs and HFCs as much as possible, cyclopentane is filling the void.
