The Role of P2S5 in Making Better Solid-State Batteries

Solid-state batteries hold a ton of promise in the pursuit of replacing cars powered by internal combustion engines with electric vehicles (EVs). Their key characteristic is a solid electrolyte that conducts ions between the negative and positive electrodes. As companies are working to develop tomorrow’s solid-state batteries, many of them are looking to do so with the help of phosphorus pentasulfide (P2S5).

P2S5 is playing an ever more critical role in advancing solid-state battery technology. Engineers are using it to enhance electrolyte performance and stabilize the electrode interface. Their success should translate into more powerful batteries that last longer and increase range significantly.

Above and beyond EV batteries, solid-state technology will ultimately replace batteries with liquid electrolytes. Everything from renewable power to household electronics will be transformed by better batteries made possible with P2S5.

A Better Electrolyte

One of the first things engineers looked at with P2S5 is its contribution to glass or ceramic materials that allow lithium ions to move more quickly through batteries. This is important because ions need to move through a solid electrolyte just as fast as they do a liquid electrolyte in order to equal current battery performance.

P2S5 is incredibly attractive because it makes a solid electrolyte less brittle. In addition, the solid electrolyte can be pressed into different shapes for more efficient contact between battery parts. You get a better performing battery as a result.

Battery Part Protection

Engineers have discovered that P2S5 can also contribute to part protection. For instance, applying P2S5 to lithium surfaces inside a battery creates a thin, protective film that inhibits dendrite production. If you are not familiar with dendrites, they reduce battery life significantly. Inhibit their production and you extend battery life.

P2S5 also increases lithium-ion efficiency as it moves between the electrolyte and the cathode. Overall battery efficiency is improved, translating into a higher range for EV batteries and longer performance for household electronics.

Better Performance on Multiple Levels

Even if P2S5 only did one thing to make solid-state batteries better, it would be worth investing in. But it actually leads to better performance on multiple levels. For instance, we have already talked about extending battery life through reducing wear and tear on the lithium surface inside the battery. But there is more.

A typical lithium-ion battery can stand up to about 1,000 charge-discharge cycles. But lithium-ion batteries with P2S5 can stand up to thousands of cycles and still maintain most of their capacity. In addition:

  • High Temperatures Are Okay – Batteries designed with P2S5 protection continue to work as intended even at higher temperatures, which is ideal for EVs and industrial equipment.
  • Doable With Solid Materials – We already know that P2S5 is compatible with liquid materials. But we now know it also works well with solid materials. This property lends itself well to developing safer solid-state batteries that don’t leak.

Solid-state batteries are still a work in progress. But engineers are making progress thanks to P2S5-based electrolytes that can actually be manufactured quite easily. The electrolytes are fairly affordable as well, allowing faster solid-state battery development moving forward.

As we depend more on electricity to power our everyday lives, we also need more storage capacity. Lithium-ion batteries with liquid electrolytes represented a huge jump over their lead-acid counterparts. The next big jump is replacing liquid electrolytes with solid alternatives. P2S5 is a big part of it.

Here at Trecora, we are extremely proud that our high purity P2S5 is playing a crucial role in the development of advanced solid-state battery electrolytes. It gives us an opportunity to help steer the future.
